Your contributions to our impact cases were transforming.  It was great working with you, I learnt a style of writing that has stayed with me beyond REF.”

In 2014, the quality of research at institutions and universities throughout Britain was assessed by the Research Excellence Framework (REF). For the first time, research was judged on how it affects the real world; and academics developed ‘case studies’ to evidence their impact.

Scientia Scripta played a key role in the production of case studies at three universities, including Cardiff University.

We worked with Cardiff’s Impact Manager and Unit of Assessment leaders to translate clunky academic text into eloquent prose with a clear narrative. Our edits and advice also helped to ensure that all case studies complied with assessment guidelines.

To improve case study scores, we offered recommendations on how to present and source strong evidence of impact. This involved close collaboration with researchers, case study authors and managers, plus contact with third parties to obtain information and factual statements.

Results of the REF assessment were published in December 2014. Cardiff ranked 2nd in the UK for the impact of its research. Many of our case studies were rated as world-leading for the research impact they described.

“You will have doubtless seen the Cardiff impact results – something in which you should take a good deal of pride.”
